Esau and Ishmael have a lot in common. They both were officially the first born to a wealthy father who had a promised blessing from God. Yet both of them were left out, and that blessing (which was supposed to be theirs) was passed on to their younger brothers.
Esau is so jealous and angry that he goes and marries a Canaanite wife, just because he knew his parents wouldn't like it. And he did not just marry any Canaanite wife, he married the daughter of Ishmael.
Ishmael and his family will continue to be a thorn in the side of the descendants of Isaac. If you will notice later that Joseph (Jacob's son and another case of the younger son being favored over the older ones) is sold by his brothers to... guess who... the Ishmaelites.
Jealousy and "wanting what I deserve" has caused a whole lot of fighting, heartache, and pain throughout history. In fact, the descendants of Ishmael are still fighting the descendants of Isaac today.
May we be people who kill jealousy in our own hearts and live, not to get our own rights, but to love and bless others.
