Emily, You are right. It is very confusing. I am always confused about some of the things they did, like marrying more than one person, giving their slaves to their husband to have children through them. All that is so hard for us to understand.
What I do know is, that no matter how misled we are, and no matter what stupid we can do, God is still good. Jacob's 12 son's from 4 different mothers, make up the 12 tribes of Israel. They truly become a great nation. They are God's blessed people. Not because they were perfect. Certainly not because their parents did everything the way God would have them do it. But because God is good, He is faithful, and He uses broken people like you and me.
I imagine that the story (and much of history itself) would look much different if they had always asked God what was best, before they made a decision. But one thing will never change... God is a good, faithful, loving, patient, and compassionate God.
I remember feeling a huge sigh of relief when I learned that the whole story of the Bible was not to show us about how great the people were, but how great our God is! It relieved a lot of confusion for me.
